We at Performance International have found that we add the greatest value to our clients if we work through the prism of the Language of Work. Let us share how we typically engage our consulting with you:
Inputs: We typically receive a call or email that asks “whether the Language of Work” would be helpful in solving X problem.” After an initial get to know you, we collect a small amount of data to confirm that indeed the LoW is the right tool for the need. We do not ask for (nor generally use) piles of information already collected. The LoW is a powerful tool for quick data gathering and analysis. So, we practice what we preach.
Outputs: Given this initial inputs, we look to desired output next. What deliverables is the client expecting…or needing to solve the problem?
Process Steps: Then we look to our process to develop the response to the request:
This is the Process we follow: Identify the level of analysis:
1. Job Level
Will the problem be solved at the individual level–generally a job model?
2. Business Unit Level
Clarifying the whole organization’s work
3. Core Process Level
Clarifying the work of a core process, such as Hiring, Marketing, Contracting, project managing, collaborating, etc.
4. Work Group Level
Clarifying the work of a new department or unit
5. Work Support – Standards – Human Relations
The client’s request might require looking at Work Support (often referred to as culture). Or to the Standards, or Human Relations which are additional tools we refer to as the Layers of Work. We can also address the Financial aspects of work.
6. After identifying the level and layers of analysis, we determine the steps our project would follow.
7. It is critical to understand the “Consequences” for both the client and for us. At the end of the project, what positive impact will we have had? What will employees get as a result of this project? And ourselves…what positive results (reputation, travel opportunities, income) will come to us? (Note: We use the word Consequences because it is the technical word, in behavioral terms, for the impact of what we have done. However, we understand that many wish to use, say, Benefits as a more acceptable frame of reference…and we adjust the wording as desired for your organization.
8. We then look at the Conditions involved. What are the terms of our contract? What rules must be followed (for example, is this a sole source contract? Government competitive bid? Will we have partners? ). What policies cover travel and expenses? What policies cover taxes and rates of compensation? What federal, state and local laws might affect timing, access, etc.). And, we look at Feedback to determine the communication loops that are needed for us to stay on track, and to know that the project is completed.
Through all stages of engagement we use the Language of Work Model as the robust model that it is in project understanding, communication, execution, measurement, feedback, and success. With us you not only get the best solutions, but you yourself and others learn the tool of analysis that has made us and will make you ever more successful. Transferring our own technology to you for project and future use by you is a key mission of our approach to working with you.
