The Language of Work

Language of Work Formula for defining and aligning work:

The Language of Work Model, as illustrated here, is composed of six interrelated words that describe behavior. It is the most current and accurate definition, or formula, for work in organizations/businesses. Devised in 1993 by Danny Langdon while working for an environmental engineering company, the Language of Work systemically links the basic elements that comprise work within the various levels and layers of organizations. See the BOD for details on the application of the six elements.

A concise description of work in business using the Language of Work Formula would be as follows:

“We use certain inputs (resources) initiated by a request (also an input known as a trigger), under given conditions (external or internal governances to the organization), by means of prescribed process steps in order to produce outputs (products/services/knowledge), to achieve certain consequences (positive value-added ends/benefits), as aided and confirmed by feedback (various kinds of communication during and after).”

In a typical job, for example, we are asked by clients and customers (trigger inputs) to produce products or services (outputs) by using inputs (resources) through given procedures (process steps), adhering to certain rules and regulations (conditions), aided by various sources that gives us feedback on how the work is going, so that positive consequences will result for those we serve as our customers and clients.
